HSF System and Carbon Footprint

The international construction group HSF System, part of the holding PURPOSIA Group, has long regarded ESG principles as a natural component of its business. In 2024, it took further steps to reduce its environmental impact, refined its carbon footprint calculations, and expanded measures in the areas of energy efficiency and circular construction.

In the Czech Republic, HSF System achieved a carbon footprint of 164.58 tCO₂ per employee, representing a 54% decrease compared to 2023. Its sister company, HSF System SK, which analysed its data for the first time, reported a carbon footprint of 177.09 tCO₂ per employee. The calculations were carried out by Green0meter and ČSOB Advisory according to the international GHG Protocol standard.
“In our view, legislation is needed to motivate investors and construction companies to adopt more sustainable solutions and reduce the carbon footprint of buildings throughout their entire life cycle, not only during their operation. It is also important to establish clear methodologies for building life cycle assessments (LCA) and set up a support system for projects that apply these principles in practice,” says Petra Cichoňová, ESG Manager at HSF System.

In 2024, HSF System focused on improving the collection and structuring of ESG data, which led to higher-quality ESG reporting. Significant steps in emissions reduction included the installation of a photovoltaic power plant at the company’s headquarters in Ostrava and the acquisition of its first electric vehicles for the company fleet. The group also strengthened cooperation with its waste processing partner, with the aim of optimising processes and reducing waste volumes. As part of enhancing responsibility within its supply chain, HSF System introduced its ESG Code of Conduct for Suppliers. “We strive to ensure that our business is sustainable in the long term. We are not doing this because we have to, but because it makes sense to us. We report ESG voluntarily, the photovoltaic power plant on the roof of our headquarters in Ostrava already covers a third of our consumption, we are exploring circular construction principles, reducing our carbon footprint, and seeking further ways to build with a lower environmental impact,” says Tomáš Kosa, Director of HSF System.

As a general contractor, HSF System incorporates sustainability principles throughout all phases of a building’s life cycle. In the design phase, it focuses on efficient structural planning and optimal use of materials. Thanks to digitalisation, the company can plan more precisely, reducing excess materials and waste. The group also sees great potential in modular construction and prefabrication, which streamline the building process and lessen its environmental impact.
“We are also actively involved in industry initiatives. We are members of an expert group within the Association of Building Entrepreneurs, where we contribute to the development of ESG methodology for the construction sector,” adds Petra Cichoňová, who will also become an ambassador for the #BuildingLife campaign under the auspices of the Czech Green Building Council, of which HSF System is also a member.

HSF System is collaborating on the development of 3D concrete printing. Together with VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, it monitored the stress levels of jointless floors, which contribute to more sustainable construction. At the University of Žilina, a research project focused on the energy efficiency of buildings was carried out. For 2025, HSF System received Deloitte’s Best Managed Companies award for the best-managed firms in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
